2020 Original Vines Chardonnay
The wineries in and around Okanagan Falls have been producing some of BC’s most celebrated wines for many years. Warm days and cool nights produce wines with ripe fruit character tamed by brisk acidity. Located just north of Macintyre Bluff this area is truly unique in BC and much cooler and rockier than the more southern areas of Oliver and Osoyoos. Average 1,407 growing degree days.
This vineyard is located overlooking Lake Vasseau and Macintyre Bluff. First planted in 1990 this site is home to some of our oldest and favorite blocks. The soils here feature mounds of glacially deposited rock with glaciofluvial sands and gravels. Harvested on October 8th at 22.5 Brix.
Hand picked for only the best fruit, this Chardonnay was gently whole cluster pressed after further sorting at the winery. Wild yeast kicked off ferment at 15 C for 3 days before being racked into new French barriques and puncheons. After Primary fermentation was completed, a malolactic conversion began, and a regime of daily lees stirring took place until secondary fermentation finished on Nov 24. A further 5 months aging in oak took place before being blended with a stainless steel component (40%).
The resulting wine is a Chardonnay with tree fruit and oak notes framed by citrus infused acidity. This wine will continue to age for 6-10 years from the vintage. Notes of lemon, peach, and spice fill the glass while the palate showcases pineapple, fresh bread, and a hint French oak spice. Shellfish or hard cheeses will work well.
